Canada’s tax deadlines, in your calendar

Add the RRSP deadline, tax day, CRA instalments and new TFSA room to Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook. Subscribe once and every year’s dates appear on their own. No account, no email.

Add it to your calendar

Tap your calendar. It opens and asks you to confirm.

Paste it where your app says “Add calendar from URL” or “Subscribe”.

Turn alerts on. Some apps mute subscribed calendars. Deadlines alert a week ahead, since moving money takes a few business days.

Your app checks for updates about once a day (Google can take longer). To stop, unsubscribe in your app.

Questions

How do I add CRA deadlines to Google Calendar?

Tap Google Calendar above, then Add. The Google Calendar app on a phone cannot subscribe by itself: if it opens and nothing happens, open this page in a browser signed in to Google and tap the button again. The calendar then shows in the app (turn its sync on in the app’s settings if it is hidden).

How do I add it on an iPhone?

Tap Apple Calendar above, then Subscribe. If your iPhone offers to remove alerts, leave alerts on: each deadline reminds you a week ahead. It appears under Subscribed in the Calendars list.

Does it update every year?

Yes. Your app checks this calendar about once a day, and the next year’s dates are added each January, so they appear without you doing anything. If a CRA rule changes, the dates change with it.

Can I add it to Outlook or a work calendar?

Yes: Outlook.com for a personal Microsoft account, Microsoft 365 for work or school. Some workplaces block calendar subscriptions; if yours does, add it to a personal calendar instead.

What is in it

  • New TFSA room

Every resident 18 or older gets new room. A good day to decide between a TFSA and an RRSP for the year.

January 1. Not a deadline, so it never moves.

TFSA vs RRSP: which to fund first

  • RRSP deadline

Contributions made by this day reduce last year's tax. Transfers can take days, so the alert comes a week early.

The 60th day of the year (March 1, or February 29 in a leap year); a weekend moves it to Monday.

  • Tax filing and balance due

The deadline to file and to pay any balance, self-employed included. Filing late costs a penalty if you owe and can delay benefits like the GST/HST credit.

April 30; a weekend moves it to Monday.

  • Self-employed filing

For people who ran a business, and their spouse or partner. Only the filing gets extra time: any balance owing was still due April 30.

June 15; a weekend moves it to Monday.

  • Quarterly instalments

Only if CRA asks you to pay by instalments, usually for self-employment, rental or investment income. Otherwise, ignore these.

March, June, September and December 15; a weekend moves each to Monday.

Every date

How dates are worked out

Every date comes from a rule, never typed in. They are CRA’s federal dates; Revenu Québec uses the same filing, payment and instalment dates.

Weekends. CRA treats a return or payment due on a Saturday or Sunday as on time the next business day, so the calendar shows that Monday. The same goes for public holidays, but none of these dates can fall on a national one.

Confirm any deadline that matters to you on CRA’s important dates page. If a rule changes, every subscriber’s calendar updates.

What is left out

  • Benefit payment days (Canada child benefit, GST/HST credit, CPP, OAS): they follow a yearly published schedule, not a rule, and a guessed date is worse than none.
  • Dollar amounts: limits change, and a figure in your calendar could never be corrected. The linked tools always use the current one.

What subscribing shares

Nothing about you or your money. Your app downloads one file from this site about once a day, and like any page visit, the host’s server logs record the request (an IP address and the app’s name). There is no sign-up, so nothing ties it to your name or email, and no way to message you.
